Samsung has said it may look to iris-scanning technology for biometric security in its upcoming Galaxy S5 smartphone.
The comments were made to Bloomberg by executive vice president of marketing for mobile Young-hee Lee during an interview at CES 2014.
“Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology… We are studying the possibility,” said Young-hee Lee.
Samsung had planned a fingerprint scanner for the Galaxy Note 3, but sources told CNET that the company was concerned about the reliability of the scanner and ultimately left it out.
Samsung will also take the design of the S5 back to the drawing board, as it were. Lee told Bloomberg:
When we moved to S4 from S3, it’s partly true that consumers couldn’t really feel much difference between the two products from the physical perspective, so the market reaction wasn’t as big. For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it’s about the display and the feel of the cover.
Lee said the S5 is scheduled to launch a year after the S4, around March or April this year. A slimmer, more advanced version of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch is anticipated for around the same time.
