Samsung Galaxy S3 pre

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the fastest selling pre-order blower of the year, according to Carphone Warehouse, which has been crunching some numbers on Samsung’s follow-up to the hyper-popular Galaxy S2.

Proving what we already suspected — that the Galaxy S3 is going to be a hugely successful mobile — Carphone says it’s taken thousands of pre-orders for the 4.8-inch smart phone.

“The first 24 hours alone saw thousands placing their pre-order,” said one Carphone bod. The retailer reckons the massive demand makes the S3 the fastest selling pre-order of the year.

If cash continues to fly out of shoppers’ wallets in Samsung’s direction after the S3’s launch next week, the Korean company’s quad-core monster looks set to eclipse Android rivals such as the HTC One X or Sony Xperia S.

That leaves only one phone that Samsung has to beat this year. The iPhone 5 (or new iPhone, as it’ll probably end up being called), is rumoured to be making an appearance in October.

Right now my fingers are crossed that Samsung manages not to screw up the S3’s launch with some horrible design or software defect. The Galaxy Nexus was afflicted with an irksome volume bug when it came out in November that prevented us from awarding it with the four-and-a-half stars it deserved, at least until Google squeezed out an update.

The iPhone 4‘s awful antenna, the Nokia Lumia 800‘s battery bug, the HTC One X‘s dodgy screen — if Samsung can get the S3 into peoples’ pockets without something going wrong, it’ll be doing well.

The S3 is out next Wednesday, or on Tuesday evening if you pre-ordered from the Samsung shop in East London. Are you excited? Will this be the year Samsung trounces Apple? Enthuse away in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

Samsung Galaxy S3 pre

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has appeared on a phone retailer’s pre-order page, detailing what could be the specs of Samsung’s much yearned-for follow-up to the Galaxy S2.

The listing, spotted by Recombu, appeared on mobilecityonline.com, a site that sells unlocked phones and mobile accessories. Is the listing genuine? It’s impossible to tell, but I’ve contacted Samsung for comment and will update this story if I hear anything one way or the other.

We’ve also sent Mobilecityonline a message to ask whether pre-orders on the site will be honoured. We’ve tried going through the purchasing process, and found it does take you up to the point of checkout.

The listing mentions a 4.65-inch display and a 12-megapixel camera, 16GB of storage and a 720p display. The most mouth-watering detail regards the processor, which is pegged as a 1.8GHz quad-core affair. Yowzers.

So are we looking at genuine details of the Galaxy S3? Well, that depends on whether the listing represents a page that’s accidentally been set live early (it happens), or whether the site in question is just guessing at the S3’s particulars based on rumours floating around the web.

The details are certainly comprehensive, but an ‘announced’ status of ‘not officially announced yet’ and a product description that says the S3 is ‘rumoured to be the company’s next flagship’ certainly looks suspect. There are also some specs notably absent, like the dimensions and weight of the device.

So I’d take these specs with a big bag of salt. The listed screen resolution chimes with our best guess regarding the Galaxy S3’s display, but while rumours of a 1080p panel were circulating, the phone was reportedly benchmarked just over a week ago, with a 720p screen being one of the specs to emerge.

We should know for certain what the S3 will look like before very long, with Samsung confirming an announcement in the first half of the year. Based on reports from South African network operators, we may well see the S3 on sale in July.

What do you want the Galaxy S3 to look like? And what kind of hardware do you think it needs to see off competition from Apple, HTC and the like? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.
