Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich on Vodafone on 12 April

Ice Cream Sandwich is coming to the Samsung Galaxy S2 on Vodafone on Thursday. After a month — and more — of waiting, those of you on Vodafone only have a couple more days to hold out.

The network says it will release the latest version of Android to S2-owning customers on 12 April — but be warned Vodafone says that’s a “provisional date which could change”.

Samsung released Ice Cream Sandwich for the S2 last month, but it’s been around much longer than that, an agonising wait for S2 owners to actually get their paws on the tasty treaty update. The delay is down to the fact that each network adds its own extras to the phone — some welcome and some utterly pointless — so must test whether these extras still work with the new software.

Almost unbelievably, unlocked SIM-free S2 phones — the ones with just Samsung’s tweaks, and no extra gumf added by any network — will be last to receive the update. Vodafone’s update brings that closer, however.

It’s not just Samsung struggling to bring us Ice Cream Sandwich, although the last month has seen a surge in uptake. Sony, for example, can’t put the latest version of Android on its new phones such as the Sony Xperia S — and it’s even tried to deflect attention from the farrago by claiming that Ice Cream Sandwich isn’t as good as Gingerbread.

There’s nothing wrong with Gingerbread, of course, but it’s no longer the latest thing. Here are our ten reasons why Ice Cream Sandwich beats Gingerbread, or click play on our video to see ICS in action.
