Samsung is rebooting its Galaxy S Android smart phone for 2011, offering a new version, the Galaxy S Plus i9001, that has a faster processor and bigger battery. For now, it’s only due to go on sale in Russia, but it could well come to other countries in the months ahead.
The handset will be known as the Galaxy S 2011 Edition in Russia, where it will go on sale in late April. The device will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI sitting on top of Google’s operating system, as is now customary on Samsung smart phones.
The Galaxy S 2011 Edition keeps the 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, but the single-core processor has been bumped up to 1.4GHz, from 1GHz, while the battery is now a 1,650mAh model. The new phone also retains its predecessor’s 8GB of internal memory, and 720p hi-def video recording and playback capability.
Want one? That’ll be 23,990 rubles (£530) if you fancy popping over to Moscow next month. We’ll keep you posted as to whether the phone is likely to come to the UK.
News of the Galaxy S 2011 Edition comes as Samsung’s main sequel, the Galaxy S 2, goes on sale in the UK. It also runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, and a dual-core 1GHz processor.
The Galaxy S 2 also has an 8-megapixel camera, rather than a 5-megapixel one, and 1080p video playback capability. With that in mind, we’d be inclined to grab the Galaxy S rather than getting too excited about the Galaxy S 2011 Edition.
