Samsung Galaxy S 2 still on course for April debut, with faster processor

Talk of a delayed release for the Galaxy S 2 may have been premature — Samsung says the smart phone’s on course to go on sale this month as planned, although not in every country.

Speculation of delay has been rife this week, after UK online retailers Play and Clove both pushed their anticipated shipping date for the Galaxy S 2 back to May. Samsung also confirmed this week that the handset’s processor has been bumped up to a 1.2GHz dual-core model, to give it more grunt.

Samsung has now responded to the delay rumours in a couple of tweets: “Samsung Galaxy S II will be first released in April, as planned” and “It will be gradually rolled out in each market according to the local launch timetable.”

That still leaves plenty of wiggle room alas — Samsung could put a few units on sale in one country this month and still technically hit its launch-date target. Then again, Play and Clove are both selling SIM-free versions of the handset, so it’s possible that one or more operators will have the Galaxy S 2 on sale this month ahead of those companies getting their stocks.

The arrival of the Galaxy S 2 is getting geeks all sweaty and excited. More than 10 million units of the original Galaxy S flew off the shelves worldwide, making it the best selling Android smart phone ever.

The newly beefed-up 1.2GHz processor is joined by a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread software. The new phone is also more rectangular than the original Galaxy S, and packs in an 8-megapixel camera, 1080p hi-def video playback, and new gaming and music ‘hubs’ to keep you entertained on the bus.
