It may not be available to the public yet, but the Google Nexus 7 has already had its first update. Both the Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first tablet and phone to run Jelly Bean, the next generation of Android, are both receiving an update from today.
The sweetly named Jelly Bean is version 4.1 of Android, Google’s latest software for phones and tablets. But today those developers who got their hands on the first batch of Google Nexus 7 slates have noticed their tablet is automatically updating to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, build JRO03C.
Although there’s no changelog outlining what’s new in Jelly Bean 4.1.1, the most obvious change is that it adds Google Wallet to the Nexus 7. Google Wallet is a digital payment app, although it only works in the US at the moment.
The update is also coming to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the previous Android flagship device running Jelly Bean’s predecessor Ice Cream Sandwich. The upgrade is promised by Google over the next few days for HSPA+ versions of the Nexus, followed by other versions, the Google Nexus S, and the old Motorola Xoom tablet.
Jelly Bean brings assorted new features including Google Now, which uses you search history to feed you information at the right time before you’ve even asked. It also adds voice search, expanded notifications, and a faster frame rate for a smoother experience — hit play on our video below to see the new software and hardware in action.

The Nexus 7 is available to order now for delivery on 19 July. The 8GB model costs £159, which is such a steal the Big G doesn’t expect to make any money from it. Carphone Warehouse and Dixons are the first retailers to announce they’ll sell the new tablet, but only the £199 16GB version.
