Samsung clocks in with the Galaxy Gear smart watch

The Galaxy Gear is no longer just a rumour. The Android-powered smart watch is real, and Samsung has said it will be available around the world on 25 September, with the US and Japan waiting until October.

The Gear has a 1.63-inch, 320×320-pixel super AMOLED screen surrounded by a metal frame, and comes with a 1.9-megapixel camera embedded into the band.

As expected, the Gear first and foremost syncs with the Galaxy family of phones and tablets, allowing you to control music or check email via the Gear’s touchscreen.

There will 70 apps customised for the Gear at launch, including Evernote and Pinterest.

However, the Gear will initially only work with the Galaxy Note 3. Samsung has said that a software update will be available after launch, which will add compatibility to the S4 and Note 2.

At the launch in Berlin, Samsung gave pricing as US$299. Locally, Samsung told CNET Australia that the Gear “will be launching in Australia soon — pricing and availability information will be made available closer to the launch date”. It’s unclear whether this means Australia is included in the 25 September launch date.
