The cheapest version of Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook has been discontinued.
RIM today told CNET in an e-mailed statement today that the company has decided to stop “making the 16GB model of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.” However, the company was quick to point out that the 32GB and 64GB models will remain on store shelves and will continue to be manufactured.
“We continue to remain committed to the tablet space and the 32GB and 64GB models of the BlackBerry PlayBook continue to be available from our distributors and retailers around the world,” the company told CNET.
RIM has faced some trouble making a mark in the tablet market, as Apple’s iPad, Amazon’s Kindle Fire, and assorted other Android-based devices secure the majority of that arena. In an attempt to drum up some interest in its 16GB model last year, the company slashed its price from its starting point of $499 to $199 for “a limited time only.” In February, it made the price official. In addition, it cut the price of its 32GB and 64GB models to $249 and $299, respectively.
RIM says that it’ll continue to offer the 16GB PlayBook while supplies last. The device is still available at numerous retailers for $199.
