Nokia C6

You may think you’re seeing double, but the Nokia C6-01 isn’t the same as the Nokia C6 that only just landed in shops. It’s just that Nokia is running out of names for its offspring faster than George Foreman — this is a completely different phone, with the brand-new Symbian 3 OS and much more besides.

If you can keep them straight, the C6-01 has plenty of features that differentiate it from its older sibling. A 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen has a feature called ClearBlack, which aims to help make it more visible in bright light.

You’ll also get an 8-megapixel camera with two LED photo lights, and support for the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 standards. When you’re out and about, HSPA will give you fast Web surfing over 3G, too.

The C6-01’s home screens can be stuffed with widgets so you can see live updates from your Facebook and Twitter feeds, as well as preview your email and texts with ease. Throw in A-GPS and the ever-underrated FM radio, and the C6-01 is a true feature-fest.

Nokia’s touchscreen phones, however, don’t tend to be the most fun to use. The update to Symbian 3 should help things somewhat, with Nokia promising “a noticeable reduction in prompts”. That means it’s cut the seemingly endless pop-up notifications, approval requests and warnings that made downloading apps and hooking up to Wi-Fi such a pain on previous Nokia phones.

Nokia’s not known for wafer-thin phones, and the C6-01 looks a little chunky at 14mm thick. But we’ll have to get our hands on it to know for sure, so look out for our hands-on photos from Nokia World, currently bathing in our darkroom in preparation for delivery by pony express straight to your Interweb portal.

The C6-01 lands in shops this winter for around €260 (£220).

Nokia C6

The C6 was only recently picked up by Vodafone, but more details have emerged about the C6-01, which you may be able to buy by the middle of September, after this year’s Nokia World.

There have been conflicting reports, but we think the C6-01 might have the Symbian 3 OS upgrade, as claimed by Mobile Geek Inc, rather than keeping the C6’s dated Symbian 1 S60 (5th edition). It should also have an 8-megapixel camera.

The leaked pictures makes it look like there is a 3.5-inch touch screen and no keyboard, but other reports contradict this, so until it’s formally announced, we’re as clueless as you.

The leak came about because of Nokia’s habit of using very similar product names. A Bulgarian retailer confused the C6-01 with the existing C6 and posted the info by mistake, like Nokia Holland did in July.

Nokia is planning to release a range of smart phones this year, but if the range is leaving you as confused as the retailer, here’s a run-down of the main phones to expect.

So to recap, the C6 is already out on contract with Vodafone. The C6-01 we think will be out mid-September.

The C7-00 was leaked last week, which, spec-wise, looks like the C6-01, with Symbian 3 and an 8-megapixel camera, two LED photo lights, and a 3.5-inch AMOLED screen. We don’t know when this will be out, but C-series phones tend to be relatively cheap.

For those of you who are looking for more power, there will be the delayed N8, which has Symbian 3 and an AMOLED screen with a 12-megapixel camera, along with multi-touch zoom in the browser. We’re looking at October for that one.

But the biggie we are really looking forward to is the N9 smart phone, which we believe will run on MeeGo, the new OS created with Intel. It also has a stylish MacBook Pro-like look and a potential Christmas release.

Got that? We know how many of you Nokia fans out there and desperate for something really game changing for the company. Which of these, if any, will make the difference? We’d like your opinion below please.
