Motorola’s Moto Maker website is an important way for the company to differentiate itself from its competitors, by offering buyers a way to personalize their phones. As of today, Moto Maker creations are sold direct to consumer and are not tied to any specific service provider. If Motorola adds the Droid Turbo 2 to the tool it would be the first time a carrier-branded model gets the custom design treatment. Initially designed to let buyers customize the first-generation Moto X smartphone, Moto Maker has since expanded to also include the Moto G and Moto 360 smartwatch. Using the website, customers are able to choose elements like the backplate design and accent colors.
The current Droid Turbo launched with black and red color options and would later get metallic refreshes as well a ballistic nylon coating. Perhaps the successor might simply debut with the handful of colors and materials.
According to Phandroid’s tipster, Verizon will carve out a portion of its store to let customers see and touch the different materials for the Droid Turbo 2. If you’re having second thoughts after designing the Droid Turbo 2, Verizon will reportedly let customers exchange their creation for free at any time within two years of purchase.
Presumed to be the US version of the Motorola Droid X Play , the Droid Turbo 2 is alleged to include a 5.43-inch “shatterproof” display, a 21-megapixel rear camera and a 3,760mAh battery. Those of you who keep a watchful eye on the Android scene may have also heard these details paired with a so-called Motorola X Force. We’ll find out soon enough, maybe even as soon as October 15, according to the report, with sales commencing two weeks later.
Motorola did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
