This month saw Samsung and Sony Ericsson start rolling out Android updates, upgrading unlocked Galaxy S with Android 2.2 and the unlocked Xperia X10 with 2.1. And it appears that O2 could be the first UK network to stick them on handsets, from next Monday.
Don’t count all your fowl yet though, as the source of this information is an anonymous screen grab sent to the website Android Central. But we know that UK networks are due to be rolling out their carrier-specific updates sometime this month, so it sounds right.
We contacted O2, but a spokeman declined to confirm the update. “We’re working to bring the latest version of Android to our Samsung Galaxy S customers as soon as we can, however I can’t comment on rumour and speculation — we’ll let customers know as soon as it’s available.”
Samsung announced that the Android 2.2 update for unlocked Galaxy S started rolling out last week. If the update for O2 owners is coming out next week, then they’ll be able to download it using Samsung’s computer software, Kies. Crave readers have already complained about this method of updating, especially when rival firm HTC does it using over-the-air updates.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro owners on O2 will have to be content with an Android 2.1 update. Users will also have to use PC Companion software to update the phone rather than rely on an over-the-air update.
The jump from Android 1.6 to 2.1 will give the Xperia X10 devices a bunch of new features and technology, including an improved browser, keyboard and camera support. There’s also X10 specific additions such as HD video-recording, and a backup and restore app. The Galaxy S will enjoy Android 2.2 benefits such as better performance and browsing, as well as the ability to run Flash 10.1.
