You wait ages for a leaked benchmark of a Samsung Galaxy S5, and then two come along at once. That’s right, Samsung could have not one but two Galaxy S5s up its sleeve, if these leaks are correct.
The two have quite different specs, the only similarities being both handsets run Android KitKat, and both have 16-megapixel cameras. The leaks come courtesy of benchmark site AnTuTu. So let’s take a look and see how they stack up.
The higher-end device is listed as the SM-G900R4. It has a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip, an Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB internal storage. The display has a resolution of 2,560×1,440 pixels. As well as the 16-megapixel camera, it has a 2.1-megapixel front-facer. Most of which squares with what a Russian tipster said recently.
The lower-specced handset, the SM-G900H, has an octa-core Samsung Exynos 5422 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, and a 1,920×1,080-pixel display.
I’ve contacted Samsung for comment and will update this story if I hear back.
If these are correct, it looks like Samsung could be about to ‘do an Apple’ on us, and ape the Cupertino company’s strategy of offering a high-end and a lower-end variant of its handset. An analyst from KGI Securities said recently that this is precisely what Samsung has planned. Others reckon Samsung has a more low-key strategy in store for the Galaxy S5, shunning the likes of the eye-scanning tech we’ve heard rumoured. Though maybe they’ve only been briefed on the lower-specced variant.
Or maybe these are just prototypes Samsung is testing, and it hasn’t made up its mind yet on the S5.
Either way, there’s not long until we find out. Samsung has sent out invites for its Samsung Unpacked event at Mobile World Congress in a couple of weeks, where all will be revealed. We’ll be there to bring you all the news as it happens, so keep it CNET.
