What’s this popping up on Nokia’s Facebook page? It’s a teaser for something happening on 18 June — that’s Monday. The image shows a satellite picture of Hawaii with Nokia maps controls over the top. And it followed this with a grainy snap of a Roland TR-808 drum machine.
While Monday is the same day as Microsoft’s much-hyped tablet unveiling, the two don’t seem to be related. Hawaii has the area code 808, and Nokia has a handset called the 808 PureView (see what it did there?), so odds are it’ll announce US availability of the PureView.
And the second pic is a drum machine with 808 in the title, just like the 808 PureView. Hands up who reckons the next snap will be of 808 State?
Yesterday we reported Microsoft is thought to be announcing its own Windows 8 tablet on Monday. There was talk of Nokia making a Windows 8 tablet, seeing as it’s already embraced the Windows 7 mobile operating system, and Nokia has shown interest in tablets previously, but unfortunately this looks like just US availability of the PureView.
In case you need reminding, the 808 PureView is Nokia’s 41-megapixel camera phone, announced at Mobile World Congress back in February. It’s a highly impressive looking camera phone, despite the fact that it runs Symbian, which is a bit of a head-scratcher. There’s also talk of a 41-megapixel Windows 8 handset, which would make more sense, but we’ll have to wait and see on that one I suppose.
A slew of Windows 8 tablets were announced at Computex in Taipei recently. They’re expected to be available around October time, the same time Microsoft launches Windows 8.
Are you disappointed Nokia isn’t announcing a tablet just yet? Or should it focus on mobile if it wants to prosper? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.
