Nokia’s Lumia 920 is one of the heftiest phones around, but the Finnish phone fabricator is reportedly planning something even more massive — a big-screen phone-tablet hybrid to take on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
People “with knowledge of the company’s plans” told the Financial Times Nokia was working on a so-called ‘phablet’, similar in size to the Note — which is 5.5 inches — but with “more advanced specifications”.
Nokia’s also planning to launch a high-end camera phone with a whopping 40-megapixel sensor this July. That’ll be the rumoured EOS PureView phone that was doing the rumour rounds in January, a Lumia with the camera tech of last year’s peculiar Symbian-powered 808 PureView.
The Finnish company already has a pretty wide range of smart phones, with the Lumia 520, 620, 720, 820 and 920. While it can’t hold a candle to Samsung’s galaxy of Galaxies, it’s still rather confusing. It’s hard to work out what the differences are, and with Windows Phone and all of Nokia’s services working perfectly well on the cheapest one, the 520, the only real differentiators are the screen size and the camera.
That means a phone with a really big screen and a phone with a really impressive camera make some sense — Nokia would have three flagship phones. Whether they would cannibalise each other, I have no idea, but it’s a clearly different strategy to Apple’s one-size-fits-all and Samsung’s one-size-for-every-single-person-on-the-planet.
