Nokia plans to put the last couple of years of N-Series near misses behind itself by gearing up for a major release of its flagship smartphone for 2010 known at this stage as the N8-00.

The manufacturer’s approach to smartphones has always been a little different to the competition’s, opting for “everything but the kitchen sink” approach to hardware, and the N8-00 appears to be no exception. Early details are suggesting a 3.5- or 4-inch capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch capabilities, HDMI video-out, and a 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a Xenon flash.

But the make or break for Nokia this year will be in the success of its update of the Symbian operating system. The N8-00 will run on Symbian^3 and Nokia is promising an exponentially simpler system to its previous releases, with an improved user experience including animation frame rates of up to 60 frames per second. If Nokia nails the software and pairs it with this calibre of hardware then it will be right back on target to be the company that has its phone in your pocket.
