Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 launch

Nokia has unveiled the Nokia Lumia 920, set to be the first Windows Phone 8 phones to hit shops — bringing with it a PureView camera and wireless charging.
The Lumia 920 sports a 4.5-inch high-definition curved glass screen that adjusts colour and brightness according to the light level when you’re out in sunlight. It also features wireless charging, which means you don’t need a cable to boost the 2,000mAh battery — just plonk it on a charging pillow to juice up.
It also packs PureView camera technology, based on the Nokia 808 PureView — except without the whacking great 41-megapixel sensor, obviously. Instead it has a ‘floating lens’, which adjusts for the infinitesimal movements of your hands as you hold the phone to take a picture.
On board is Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 software. Windows Phone 8 includes a new home screen, which lets you resize the software’s signature coloured squares. It also improves maps, voice control and support for high-definition screens.
Built-in apps include indoor maps, and sat-nav that automatically tells you how long your commute will take. Nokia also shows off City Lens, an augmented reality app that shows you information about the shops and bars on any street you point the camera at.
It’s important for Nokia to get these new phones in shops tooty sweets, with the current Lumia line-up left high and dry by Microsoft’s decision to cut off Windows Phone 7 phones from new software updates, new apps and new features.
These are the first Windows Phone 8 phones to actually appear in the flesh, after Samsung heralded the Ativ S last week but didn’t have any to show to the world. Meanwhile HTC unveils its Windows Phone 8 phones on 19 September.
