Nokia today announced its third Windows Phone 8 handset, filling out its current range with a budget option aimed at the youth market.
The Lumia 620 will go on sale early next year for US$249. This figure will likely be higher in Australian stores, but it should still be one of the cheapest Windows Phone 8 devices in the first half of 2013.
Riffing on the bold, colourful tiles of Microsoft’s platform, Nokia’s baby Lumia features “dual-shot” snap-on colour case options. Essentially, this is a translucent colour case that sits over the standard phone chassis, giving you multiple colour options. Your phone might be yellow, for example, but will become green with a snap-on blue cover.
The base handset colour covers a wide range to begin with, available in lime green, orange, magenta, yellow, cyan, white and black.
More impressive is the hardware spec that Nokia will pack into the 620 at this low price point. The handset will be powered by a dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm S4 processor and 512MB RAM. It also has 8GB of internal storage, plus a microSD card slot and NFC for pairing and sharing with compatible devices. It’s 1300mAh battery does seem a tad small, but hopefully, it is sufficient for powering the phone’s 3.8-inch WVGA display.
There is no fixed date for an Australian release at this stage, though Nokia’s global press release does state that the phone is expected in Asia during January 2013.
