Virgin Mobile’s new $40 rate plan bags you 4GB of high

Virgin Mobile shook up pricing on its rate plans on Tuesday, offering $30, $40 and $50 per month plans that give you 500MB, 4GB and 6GB of high-speed data respectively, as well as unlimited talk and text.

The prepaid service space is an increasingly competitive market often characterized by high customer turnover.

In an attempt to keep subscribers, prepaid carriers such as Virgin Mobile, Cricket Wireless and MetroPCS steadily ratchet up data allotments and features such as international calling or unlimited music streaming.

Although Virgin Mobile markets its data plans as unlimited, you only get a certain amount of high-speed data per month. Use up more than your allotment and speeds crawl at 2G until the following month.

If you run out too early, you can always buy extra data in $5 or $10 increments to get another 1GB or 2GB of data. Virgin Mobile’s plans also include unlimited music streaming from services such as Pandora and iHeartRadio.
