Samsung has confirmed via its Facebook page that the Galaxy Nexus will be available exclusively through Verizon Wireless in the U.S. during its initial release. However, Samsung has said that it’s possible for other carriers to offer the phone at a later date.
Samsung and Google announced the Galaxy Nexus along with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich last night at a press conference in Hong Kong. The Galaxy Nexus is the latest in the Nexus line of phones that is developed with Google’s guidance, and is meant as a showcase for the latest Android operating system.
The Galaxy Nexus has a large 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, a rear 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, NFC support, a barometer, and more. The global HSPA+ version shown at the press conference measures 8.94mm (0.35 inch) thick, but the LTE version is said to be slightly thicker. As the Galaxy Nexus is headed to Verizon in the U.S., that device will likely be the LTE version.
The Motorola Droid Razr, which was also announced yesterday, is also only available on Verizon at launch. Verizon customers, are you more excited about the Droid Razr or the Galaxy Nexus? Non-Verizon customers, will you switch for either of these handsets? Let us know in the comments.
UPDATE: Samsung has just updated their Facebook page with a post that says “My mistake, no U.S. carrier has been determined yet. Stay tuned for updates.” A case of somebody jumping the gun?
