The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is almost ready to update to KitKat. Lucky Note owners in Europe are the first to enjoy Android 4.4.2 KitKat, so fingers crossed the update is coming to our shores soon.
At the time of writing, it appears the update has shown up in the Kies software of Note owners in Poland. I contacted Samsung to find out when it will be available here in the UK, and a spokesperson told me, “Samsung UK will announce rollout plans for Android 4.4 in due course.”
I’m guessing an over-the-air update shouldn’t be too long for unlocked phones, although as always devices locked to networks will probably take slightly longer.
The new KitKat software sees a few small changes such as status bar icons changing to white, a shortcut to the camera added to the lock screen, and some changes to the onscreen keyboard. The update is also set to speed things up slightly, thanks to its more efficient power management.
At the end of last year Samsung announced 10 million Note 3s were sold in the first two months. A surprise hit back in 2011, the Note’s oversized screen and S Pen stylus inspired a new category of mobile device, the phablet. Samsung is also rumoured to be planning a cheaper Note 3 Lite.

KitKat is also available on Google’s own Google Nexus 5, and is set to arrive on the Motorola Moto G any day.
