Samsung may reveal a rival to Google Glass before the year is over, at least according to the latest scuttlebutt.
Citing comments from unnamed company officials, Korea Times said on Monday that Samsung is aiming to unveil its so-called Galaxy Glass eyewear at the IFA 2014 trade show, which runs from September 5 to 10. The glasses would reportedly link with a Samsung smartphone to display information, letting wearers answer phone calls and listen to music, the Korean news site added.
Samsung Electronics is working with Samsung Display to outfit the displays for the high-tech specs, Korea Times added.

“The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication,” one anonymous Samsung official reportedly told Korea Times. “The smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability. Wearable devices can’t generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets.”
Korea Times’ track record is decidedly hit and miss, but the report follows other hints that Samsung may be readying a pair of high-tech specs.
A Samsung patent filing from last October revealed an electronic devices in the form of eyewear, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The device would use integrated earphones to let users take phone calls and listen to music.
At an Analyst Day last November, Samsung Vice Chairman and CEO Kwon Oh-hyun said that the company had been devoting major resources to various technologies, including “wearables,” according to the Journal, which attended the event. The slide that appeared during the CEO’s comment showed Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch and eyeglasses that could compete with Google Glass.
