Nokia and Google Gem smart watches leak

Watch out Samsung: Google and Nokia are gunning for the Samsung Galaxy Gear with their own smart watches.

The Google Gem is reported by Artem Russakovskii of Android police to be headed for an official announcement on 31 October, when Android KitKat — the next generation of Android software for phones and tablets — is expected to be officially launched.

And leaked photos from China purport to show a prototype Nokia smart watch, if they’re real.

Nokia’s in a good position to make a smart watch, as the Windows Phone software used in the Nokia Lumia range of phones scales well to different-sized screens. In fact, Samsung’s Galaxy Gear basically nicks Windows Phone’s coloured square tiles rather than trying to squeeze Android into a 1.5-inch screen.

Wearable technology is set to be the next big thing, with smart watches leading the way. Recent wrist-worn wonders include the Sony SmartWatch 2 and Nissan Nismo, a watch that talks to your car. Hit play on our video for more on this exciting new wave of gadgets:
