The LG Optimus 2X will at some point be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as will “other LG high-end smart phones”, the company has promised in a statement on its Facebook page.
The statement was made in response to rumours that the Optimus 2X wouldn’t be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich treatment at all.
While it’s good to hear LG owners won’t be left bereft of the next major update to Google’s mobile operating system, the big question is when you can expect Ice Cream Sandwich to hit your phone.
LG says it’s “currently in the process of planning the ICS OS update”, but we’d be surprised if it arrived any time soon — it was literally only yesterday that the Optimus 2X was updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
As to which other mobiles LG is planning on giving the Ice Cream Sandwich treatment, that’s anyone’s guess. But we’d hazard the LG Optimus 3D will be getting a scoopful and potentially the Optimus Black too, seeing as all three were confirmed to be getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread yesterday.
HTC is yet to make clear when its phones will upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich, saying in a statement of its own that it’s, “looking closely at the new OS’s features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans.
“Upgrades require a careful balance of hardware and software to ensure the best possible performance and usability,” the Taiwanese tech giant said, “so please stay tuned as we assess our product portfolio.”
In August HTC finally released a Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire, but updating wasn’t simple, and anyone who felt like updating risked hobbling their phones.
Motorola, meanwhile, has confirmed its upcoming Motorola Razr smart phone won’t be running Ice Cream Sandwich until 2012, despite the company’s high-profile acquisition by Google, and early reports suggest the rumoured Motorola Xoom 2 will arrive running Android 3.2 Honeycomb rather than the creamy, frosted 4.0 version everyone’s looking forward to.
Waiting for ages to get the latest version of Android is hugely frustrating for owners who’ve put their faith in Google’s green robot. Android is frequently updated, and the promise of future updates is one of the things that makes the OS appealing in the first place. But if manufacturers keep dragging their heels when it comes to getting the latest version into customers’ hands, that excitement will dwindle rapidly.
