Hacker group Dev-Team (specifically noted jailbreaker @comex) has released the latest version of its popular iOS device jailbreaking tool, available entirely online.
This comes as a great comfort to users who may have been considering jailbreaking their iPhone or iPad but were not feeling confident in their device-hacking skill set.
The site works pretty simply. Log on with the iOS device you wish to jailbreak and follow the onsite instructions to forgo Apple’s iOS and install Cydia. Supported devices for jailbreakme.com:
- iPad 1: 4.3 through 4.3.3
- iPad 2: 4.3.3
- iPhone 3GS: 4.3 through 4.3.3
- iPhone 4: 4.3 through 4.3.3
- iPhone 4-CDMA: 4.2.6 through 4.2.8
- iPod Touch (third generation): 4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3
- iPod touch (fourth generation): 4.3 through 4.3.3
Users wanting to jailbreak their iPad 2 or iPhone 4 should be aware that the exploit used to hack into Apple’s software could be closed by Apple in its next iOS update, rendering the site useless for the updated version of iOS.
It is also important to note that while many view jailbreaking as a good thing, the exploits used to install Cydia and other unapproved applications to your iOS devices could also be used for malicious purposes. Users should be sure to create a backup of their current iOS device before jailbreaking and revert, should anything not appear correct.
Be sure to read up on all the latest news and notes about jailbreaking from the Dev-Team blog and the FAQ on jailbreakme.com.
