iPhone OS 3.2 Beta 4 yanks camera software support, developers gain gestures

As the iPhone OS ramps up to accommodate the upcoming iPad release, many are hoping for last-minute surprises, including a camera for every iPad. According to 9to5Mac, however, beta 4 of iPhone OS 3.2 isn’t exciting so far.

The graphics in the previous SDK that lead everyone to think that the iPad might support a camera are now gone, according to screenshots posted on the Web site.

The only surprise, according to 9to5Mac, is possible new multitouch gestures: triple tap and a long press.

We don’t think these gestures are new, however. Triple-tap seems identical to the three-finger tap we wrote about in a past article (tap to Zoom tip), and it is also used in VoiceOver, the iPhone’s screen reader for the visually impaired.

The long presses are mostly likely the action used to initiate copy-and-paste on the iPhone, start the process for uninstalling apps, and in Mobile Safari when working with embedded URLs.

These gestures were unavailable to developers in the past, however. From now on, developers will be able to use these gestures in their own iPhone and iPad apps–good news for some.
