iPhone 5S to come in a fourth colour, leaked part hints

Well look what we have here. So we’ve already seen those leaked snaps that suggest the next iPhone will come in a rather fetching champagne gold finish, but how about a gunmetal grey version to go with it?

There’s not a whole lot to go on with this one, admittedly. And as with all Apple leaks, it’s worth taking with a pinch of salt. But this gunmetal grey SIM card tray has come from Japanese publication ASCII JP, the same source as the champagne gold iPhone, SlashGear reports. So there could be something in it.

If true, that would be four colours Apple is offering the next iPhone in: white, black, champagne gold and gunmetal grey. So far, the iPhone has only been available in white or black. So what about those more lurid colours we’ve seen leak? Well they could be for the more wallet-friendly iPhone 5C we’ve heard so much about.

I can see why Apple would want to offer more colour options. The Moto X lets you customise the handset to your heart’s content, though it’s only in the US at the moment. But with hardware and software all much of a muchness nowadays, phone makers need to find new ways to stand out. And if Apple starts selling a budget version of its handset, why not offer more choice to those paying a premium?

As I say, pinch of salt. There are plenty of leaks ahead of a big Apple announcement, so it’s tough picking which ones look on the money and which are fabricated by people with too much time on their hands.

Apple is rumoured to be holding an event on 10 September. The company sometimes hints what we can expect in the invite, but — *checks inbox* — it hasn’t sent them out yet.
