Huawei, the China-based mobile firm that builds everything from handsets to wireless telecom gear, has reported a strong first half of 2014.
Huawei shipped a total of 64.2 million mobile devices during the first six months of the year, including 34.3 million smartphones, the company reported Tuesday. Huawei’s smartphone shipments were up 62 percent compared with the same period in the prior year.
The company attributed its strong first half to its improved device line, which includes the company’s Mate 2 4G and the Ascend P7. Huawei said the Ascend P7, which launched in May and includes a 5-inch 1080p display and 8-megapixel front-facing camera specifically for better selfies, sold nearly 2 million units worldwide in its first two months.
In the second quarter specifically, Huawei reported that it sold 20 million smartphones in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.
Huawei’s efforts to expand in the US have been stymied by American lawmakers who are concerned about its possible connections to the Chinese government. Both ZTE and Huawei had hopes of entering the US market with their telecommunications gear, but US lawmakers have argued that their technology could be used to spy in the US on behalf of the Chinese government. Huawei has maintained that it is independent from the Chinese government. Still, that segment of the company’s business has been stopped from entering the US market.
Looking ahead, Huawei said it’s planning to launch more high-end 4G LTE devices. The company also plans to show off wearable tech in the second half of the year.
