The successor to last year’s HTC One won’t be officially unveiled until Tuesday, but one benchmark site is already proclaiming it the new king of the smartphone hill.

Rightware, which collects benchmark data from a series of free apps that anyone can download to their devices to contribute to the company’s data pool, has proclaimed HTC’s next flagship Android phone, rumored to be named the HTC One M8, its new top performing smartphone in its overall benchmark rating and in its gaming-focused benchmark.

The methodology behind Rightware’s benchmarks isn’t exactly clear. In addition to the phone being unreleased, the fact that Rightware’s data seems to be essentially crowdsourced also introduces all kinds of variables into the mix, but still, it makes Tuesday’s launch of the HTC One M8 all the more intriguing.

Particularly interesting is the fact that the new HTC phone comes in several spots higher on the overall rating than the Samsung Galaxy S5 , despite the fact that the new pair of phones are the only models in the top ten equipped with the new Snapdragon 801 chip, according to Rightware. The Galaxy S5 is actually clocked at 2.5GHz to the 2.3GHz seen on the HTC One M8, according to the benchmark.

When it comes to accessing the Web, the HTC One M8 ranked a little lower on Rightware’s benchmark, below both the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy S5, as well as the Nexus 5 .

CNET will cover Tuesday’s HTC event with a live blog starting at 8 a.m. PT.
