Taiwanese smartphone-maker HTC may have only just revealed the M9, its latest flagship, but a number of leaks from China suggest the upcoming HTC E9 might be a strong competitor for your attention.

China’s telecommunications regulator TENAA has posted an image of the E9, revealing a phone that’s flatter and thinner than the M9, with a larger and higher-resolution screen, Engadget reported.

The information from TENAA says the E9 will have dimensions of 156.5×76.5×7.54 mm (6.1 x 3 x 0.3 inches) as well as a 5.5-inch screen and a 2,800mAh battery. There has been no information regarding the phone’s weight.

Previously, the usually reliable Upleaks had reported that the E9’s 5.5-inch screen would have a Quad HD resolution (2,560×1,440) compared to the M9’s 1080p. The chipset will also be significantly different, with HTC eschewing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon for a MediaTek MT6795 octacore processor running at 2.0GHz.

Other specs include a 20MP rear camera, same as the M9, as well the same configuration of 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The operating system looks set to be Android Lollipop.

The HTC E8 was essentially a plastic-cased version of the HTC M8, but with slightly lower hardware specs, making the purported E9 a departure for the Taiwanese company. This has actually lead some commentators to speculate that these specs might be for the M9 Plus.

According to Upleaks, the E9 is slated for a late March launch, so hopefully we won’t be left in the dark for too long.
