HTC Desire owners on 3 have finally joined the Android 2.2 Froyo party, with the update roll-out starting today.
The update rolled out from 9am this morning, meaning 3 users can now join O2, Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile customers in upgrading to Froyo. Android 2.2 is a significant upgrade, boosting the phone’s functionality with improved speed and additional features, as well as Flash 10.1 compatibility.
“We’ve been working closely with HTC to make sure the update delivers the best possible experience for our customers. We’re looking very closely at how we can speed up this process,” said 3’s branded-handsets boss Sylvia Chind.
HTC Desire owners on 3 weren’t particularly happy before the update was rolled out, according to our sister site ZDNet UK. Many were annoyed about the delay, but also the lack of communication regarding when they could expect the upgrade.
“We appreciate that many of you have been left frustrated with the time it’s taken us to get the Android 2.2 update for the HTC Desire out to you. I’ve read all your comments and it’s obvious that we haven’t been as clear as we should have been in communicating the details of the process to you,” Chind replied.
Finally, it looks like the saga of upgrading the HTC Desire to Android 2.2 has ended. Google first released the update at the end of July, meaning it has taken the UK mobile networks two months to test the upgrade and get it onto handsets. This is obviously not good enough. Hopefully the networks have learned their lesson and the next Android upgrade runs more smoothly.
Samsung Galaxy S owners should soon get their Android 2.2 upgrade. After taking its sweet time testing the software, Sammy will release the update to all networks at the same time. Cross your fingers and hope the upgrade rolls out a little better than it did with the Desire!
