New smartphone users reach 583,000 per week, says analyst

Smartphone adoption is heating up in the United States.

Around 583,000 people in the U.S. per week are buying smartphones, Asymco analyst Horace Dediu said in a blog posted on Wednesday. That figure is up from the average 572,000 per week witnessed over the past 41 months.

Assuming Dediu’s estimates are accurate, that means the mobile industry will snare more than 13 million smartphone users in the U.S. before 2013 ends. Almost 60 percent of the U.S. population owns a smartphone, according to Pew Internet and ComScore. And despite concerns about saturation, the rate of adoption is actually growing, Dediu said.

Around 2.5 million more people began using a smartphone during the three months ending in May as compared with the three months that ended in April, Dediu added.
