The picture gets a little bit clearer for two rumored Nexus smartphones today as reliable Twitter source @onleaks shares new unconfirmed details.
We’re getting to that point of the year where we look for new handsets from Google and its partners. Often released in conjunction with the latest Android OS, Google’s Nexus phone line is typically refreshed in the fall. Sold directly to consumers, these models are unlocked and typically priced lower than top phones from other vendors.

Unlike previous years, Google may tap two hardware makers for the next generation of Nexus smartphones. LG is expected to release a new take on 2013’s Nexus 5 ; Huawei is alleged to be in charge of the larger counterpart this time around.
Assuming the newly reported specs prove accurate, a new LG Nexus 5 and Huawei Nexus 6 could share a number of key features. Key among the hardware may be stereo front-facing speakers, USB Type-C ports and rear fingerprint scanners. What’s more, Onleaks says the Huawei is has a metal body while the LG is “likely” to include the same materials.
According to details leaked in July, the new Nexus 6 should boast a 5.7-inch screen with a 2,560×1,440-pixel resolution. The new Nexus 5, for its part, could offer up a more pocketable 5.2-inch display.
We won’t be surprised if the next-gen Nexus phones include USB Type-C chargers and fingerprint scanners. Google announced support for these features in Android M at its annual Google I/O conference in May and USB Type-C is likely to be the next big thing in smartphone connections.
The new reports might not reveal all that much in the way of “new”, but they do give us a sense as to what we might expect in the forthcoming devices. Unlike recent models from the likes of Samsung (the Galaxy S6) and HTC (the One M9+) , the fingerprint scanner may be on the back. Doing so could keep the Nexus phones free from front-facing hardware buttons, relying on soft keys for navigation.
There is no indication as to when we might look for the new Nexus phones to roll out, but history tells us to look for the fourth quarter. In the meanwhile, Google is continuing to refine and ready Android M for its consumer debut.
Neither LG nor Huawei responded to a request for comment.
