New iPod touch has 4

Apple went back to its mobile roots at the launch of the new iPhone 5, unveiling two new iPod MP3 players: the iPod touch and iPod nano, the touch coming complete with multiple colours and Siri.

The iPod nano (below) shares the new nine-pin Lightning connector with the new iPhone 5. At just 5.4mm thick, it’s 38 per cent slimmer than previous nanos, and has returned to the tall, slim look.

The new iPod touch is the fifth-generation model. It’s only 6.1mm thick, and Apple says it’s the lightest touch ever, weighing just 88g. Inside is the A5 dual-core chip found in the iPhone 4S.

Like the new iPhone, it’s been stretched to a 4-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. That means no black bars around video or TV as you watch on the go.

Another new iPhone feature added to the iPod touch is a panorama mode for the camera — with a new wrist strap accessory to stop you dropping it, called the loop.

And the touch now gets Siri, the voice-controlled personal assistant first heard on the iPhone 4S.

Finally, the touch now comes in white, black, blue, yellow, pink and charity-style red, with colour co-ordinated wrist straps. The new iPods, like the iPhone 5, come with redesigned new earbuds, called earpods. Let’s hope they’re much better than the horrible white abominations that have blighted iDevices for so many years.

You can order your new iPod on 14 September and it will go on sale in October. The iPod touch will cost £250 for the 32GB model and £330 for the 64GB model, while the fourth-generation model drops in price.

The nano is also available in October and costs £130 for the 16GB model.

What do you think of the new iPods? Is the iPod touch still a touch of class — or is it out of touch? Is it a resounding yes to the iPod nano — or is it nano no-no? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.
