EE, currently the UK’s only 4G network, has bundled nearly 700,000 Brits onto its super-speedy tariffs.
The number of customers using the faster mobile ‘net technology is 687,000, EE proudly boasted today, claiming that the rate of people signing up doubled in the months from April-June, compared to the previous five months.
EE also said that it’s “on track” to hit the 1 million customer mark by the end of 2013.
In its quarterly financial report, EE told investors that it had seen “strong 4G adoption and data revenue growth”, which roughly translates to, “We’re making tonnes of cash from data.”
EE also claims that 50 per cent of people of are using the Internet more frequently thanks to 4G speeds — though you’ll remember that’s what the network said people wouldn’t do when it was defending its tariffs’ tight data limits, saying the average customer only uses 1.4GB of data per month, hence unlimited data options would be “unnecessary”.
EE is currently the only 4G game in town, but it won’t be for long, as rival operators are revving up their speedy-data engines and are primed to debut their own LTE offerings.
Three has promised that prices won’t increase, but it remains to be seen how much O2 and Vodafone plan on charging for the privilege of high-speed tweets and cat videos.
