Like the idea of Google Glass, but don’t fancy swiping the side of your specs the whole time? There’s an app for that. It’s called MyGlass, and it’s just been updated to let you control your hi-tech spectacles from your Android-powered mobile.
I know, part of the appeal of Glass is that you don’t have to fetch your phone out of your pocket, but endless swiping and speaking commands might get a little tiring. And that’s where MyGlass comes in.
It uses screencast, which lets you share what you can see through your Glass glasses with other people. Then you can control your spectacles from your mobile — just touch, swipe, and tap the screen to use all the features you’d usually access from the glasses themselves.
The app is up for download now, but you will need a pair of Glass spectacles in order to use it. Though Glass might need an update itself in order for the controls to work.
Glass should be out either at the end of the year or at the start of 2014. It’s expected to cost around £1,000, though one expert reckons it should only set you back around £200. Well, we can dream. Though the price of new gadgets always comes down once they’re no longer so exclusive.
Google enlisted 8,000 tech trailblazers to try out the Explorer Edition, so don’t be alarmed if you see people walking around swiping along the arms of their glasses and seemingly talking to themselves. Apple CEO Tim Cook is, unsurprisingly, a little skeptical about Glass. But Facebook head honcho Mark Zuckerberg is a fan.
Glass also raises a host of privacy concerns. Google attempted to put our fears at rest by saying it wouldn’t add facial recognition without having strong privacy protections in place.
