Motorola Milestone XT720 gets speed boost, Dext still dead

It might not be Android 2.2, but those of you who recently bought the Milestone XT720 will get a free speed boost thanks to a new software update.

We commented on the XT720’s processor in our original review, as although it had a maximum speed of 720MHz, Motorola capped it to 550MHz. In a Facebook post, Motorola Europe said you could now download new software which will mean it’ll run at its maximum pace. This could well make a significant difference, as we noticed that menu navigation frequently felt sluggish.

The update also adds DLNA functionality, a useful feature found in TVs, consoles and other audio-visual kit, used to stream movies, photos and digital media from device to device. So for example you’ll be able to watch photos and video you take on the Milestone on your big-screen TV.

The Milestone XT720 is a follow-up to the original Milestone, losing the Qwerty keyboard but adding 720p video recording, an 8-megapixel camera and Android 2.1 without Motoblur, its proprietary Android skin. We particularly admired the camera, and along with the software announcement Motorola created a video to help you get the best out of it.

As far as Android 2.2 in concerned, for both Milestones it should be coming before the end of the year, together with the added benefit of Flash 10.1. The Milestone 2, with Android 2.2 running out of the box, should be coming to you soon.

Even though there was a storm of protest, Motorola still has no plan to give the Dext any type of Android upgrade, saying it will “remain on Android 1.5 for the best combined hardware and software experience”. This is though testing is currently going on for the US equivalent device, which will be getting Android 2.1 later this year or early next.

Do you have the Milestone XT720? Are you happy with the speed boost from this update or impatient for a Froyo upgrade? And Motorola Dext owners, do you still feel abandoned and screwed over? We love hearing your tales of woe.
