AT&T subscribers will have a first crack at Motorola’s Moto X smartphone.

The new phone will arrive at AT&T on August 23, the carrier revealed Friday. Buyers will be able to pick up the phone at AT&T’s retail stores or at its Web site.

Customers who opt for the standard two-year agreement can get the 16GB Moto X for $199.99 and the 32GB edition for $249.99. Those who go with AT&T’s Next installment plan will have to cough up $27 per month for the 16GB model and $32 a month for the 32GB version.

AT&T subscribers who pick up a Moto X will also be able to tap into Moto Maker. Being touted by Motorola, Moto Maker is a new tool that lets you customize your phone online. You can choose such items as the color, the capacity, the wallpaper, and your phone’s startup message.

Verizon is expected to offer the Moto X starting August 29. The phone will also be sold by Sprint and US Cellular and will be available through Best Buy and other national retail chains.

T-Mobile won’t sell the Moto X directly, at least not yet. Instead, T-Mobile subscribers can buy the phone through Motorola, a T-Mobile spokesperson told AllThingsD earlier this month.
