Microsoft is planning a new version of both the Microsoft Surface and Surface Pro tablets alongside Windows 8.1 and the Xbox One.
Microsoft’s plans for the foreseeable future, spotted by The Verge, include updates to both the Surface, which uses the tablet-friendly Windows 8 RT software, and the Surface Pro, which uses full-fat Windows 8 so you can install programs just like on a normal PC.
Recent rumours suggest the new Surface RT will include a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip and could go 4G for even faster Internet connection.
The Surface Pro will probably be beefed up with a next-generation Intel Haswell chip, as featured in top-notch new ultrabooks and tablets.
Microsoft’s decision to persevere with the Surface may not impress other manufacturers of Windows tablets, because it means just one more competitor in the market.
The roadmap for Microsoft’s future was revealed at the Worldwide Partner Conference, a shindig in Texas for Microsoft’s partner companies. Although it doesn’t detail dates, the plan also includes new Surface accessories; Windows 8.1, the first big update to Windows 8; and the new Xbox One games console with Kinect, all before the end of the year.
Microsoft also promises new stuff related to Windows Phone, including more low-cost devices, “killer hardware”, and “start screen innovation”.
