MegaReader app adds heads

One of the major problems faced by our generation is how to read safely while walking, driving, carrying a baby, and so on.

After all, with your eyes glued to your iPhone’s screen, it’s just a matter of time before you take a header down the stairs or plow into a tree.

Thankfully, there’s one app that’s looking out for you: MegaReader. As you may recall, MegaReader is an e-book viewer that provides access to a whopping 1.8 million free books.

The latest version adds something called Walk n’ Read Heads Up Display technology, which leverages the iPhone’s camera to display a real-time background. Take a look:

So, yeah, it’s all a big joke. Except that MegaReader 2.1 really does have a Heads Up Display feature, complete with a transparency slider so you can adjust just how much of the real world seeps through the background.

Is there any practical value here? Um, no. Reading is meant to be done while curled up in a chair. Or in bed. Or on an airplane. If you absolutely must enjoy a book while moving around, stick with audiobooks. (And please, for the love of humanity, don’t read while driving. Ever. Like, ever, ever, ever.)

I still think MegaReader is a bargain at $1.99, though it’s worth noting that the free Kobo e-book app provides access to the same 1.8 million titles. The only catch is that you have to sign up for an account.
