Those of you lucky enough to live in the land of the mugged and not appreciated will be glad to hear that O2 is rolling out a massive free Wi-Fi zone across the London boroughs of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea.
The deal has been struck in partnership with Westminster City Council, and the fancily titled Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. O2 says the enormous Internet zone will run at “no cost to the councils or the taxpayer”.
A Metro wireless network is going to be installed across London, secured to street furniture, which we imagine will include posts, bollards, and hopefully the lions surrounding Nelson’s Column.
There’s no word on a completion date just yet, but installation begins this month and O2 has said the network will be ready in time for the London Olympics. Natty.
The upcoming Olympic sweat-fest is provoking all sorts of interesting stuff in the tech world. London mayor Boris Johnson has said the Olympics will place ‘maximum strain’ on phone networks, while competitive tweeting will be a sport even the laziest Londoners can indulge in, and Google Wallet might just make an appearance before the starting gun.
