LG will launch ten new smart phones by the end of the year, with new additions to the Optimus range chipped by Nvidia, as well as the Android tablet it previously confirmed.
LG confirmed it would be using Nvidia dual-core processors for its high-end Android phones, the Wall Street Journal reports.
This might be a win for both companies: Nvidia has been trying to expand its business away from making PC graphics cards with its Tegra smart phone chips, while LG will be first to offer the technology.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips have so far powered the most successful devices, such as the Google Nexus One and HTC Desire. Qualcomm isn’t standing still either, preparing to release a speedy 1.5GHz chip for devices before the year is out.
LG also plans to release an Android-running Optimus tablet computer by the end of the year, in competition with its Korean rival Samsung’s Galaxy tablet.
Chang Ma, vice president for marketing for LG mobile, made the rather brave statement that, “Our tablet will be better than the iPad.”
The tablet will be focused more on creating rather than showing, with a focus on writing documents, editing documents and creating video, according to the WSJ.
LG has some work to do in a highly competitive high-end smart phone market which is dominated by RIM, HTC and Apple. Although LG does have a line up of Android phones in its Optimus range, it hasn’t quite caught the imagination like Android handsets by other companies. With this new assault of Android- and Nvidia-packing smart phones the Korean company will hope to change that.
So what do you think of Nvidia chips being in new Android LG Optimus phones? Does the potential excite you, and what hope do you have for an LG Android-based tablet? Let us know.
