Audiophiles now have an alternative to streaming music and chewing into their data allowance with the launch of the LG Stylus DAB+, the first smartphone with a built-in digital radio tuner.
DAB+ offers all the standard radio stations you’re used to listening to, plus a range of digital-only channels that cater to niche interests (country music or Christmas carols anyone?) And because it’s broadcast like traditional radio, there’s no data connection required.
You won’t just save money on your streaming subscriptions and data bills — LG has cut under the AU$500 mark, offering the Stylus for AU$449.
While devices with an FM radio tuner are nothing new, the Stylus is the first smartphone in the world that receives DAB+ digital radio broadcasts. But there’s a catch. Because digital radio is only available in Australia in the metro capitals (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth) you’ll need to be a city-dweller to get the most out of the phone.
Aside from the DAB+ tuner and the slide-out stylus that gives the smartphone its name, the other features are almost identical to those found on the recently-announced Stylus 2:
- 5.7-inch HD display with 1,280×720-pixel resolution
- 1.2GHz quad-core processor
- 13-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel front camera
- 2GB RAM
- 16GB storage (expandable with microSD)
- 3,000mAh removable battery
- 155 by 79.6 by 7.4mm; 145 grams
- Android 6.0 Marshmallow
The LG Stylus DAB+ will be available from May 2 from Optus stores, All Phones, Big W and selected Harvey Norman and Good Guys stores, and from May 5 in Virgin Mobile stores.
