LG Optimus 4X HD is a fantastic four with Ice Cream Sandwich

May the 4X be with you! The LG Optimus 4X HD goes four to the floor today, bringing four cores and Ice Cream Sandwich.

The 4X sports a hefty 4.7-inch screen. Inside is a 1.5GHz
Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor, powering the latest version of Android.

It is the follow-up to the LG Optimus 2X, the first dual-core Android phone. So next year I’m looking forward to the Optimus 6X packed with six cores — get on that, Nvidia and LG, mmmkay?

The Tegra 3 chip boasts four cores, primed to ramp up for fast-moving games, high-definition video, or handling several tasks at once. But when things are a bit quieter, a fifth core kicks in that casually handles such everyday tasks as simple phone calls, emails and playing music.

There’s 1GB of RAM on board and 16GB of storage for your music, movies, snaps and apps. Sixteen is 4×4, which neatly fits with the theme, and the camera is an 8-megapixel snapper, which is 2×4, so that sort of fits too.

A second camera for video calling is a 1.3-megapixel job that doesn’t fit into four at all. Sort it out, LG.

LG also announced the Optimus 3D Max this week, the sequel to the three-dimensional Optimus 3D. The new phones will be on show in a matter of days at annual phone extravaganza Mobile World Congress. CNET will be there to bring you all the latest news, reviews, videos and hands-on time with the newest cutting-edge mobile phones and tablets. So don’t go changing!

The 4X HD is expected some time in spring. We’ll bring you full price and release details as soon as we know. Are you excited about the 4-inch, 4-core 4X? Tell me your forethoughts and foresights in the comments or on our aforementioned Facebook page.
