LG teases something ‘playful’ for Mobile World Congress 2016

The dust from last week’s CES 2016 tech show has barely settled, but that hasn’t stopped LG from sending out a teaser invitation for their event at the next big conference, Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. Though LG didn’t disclose the location, it will take place on Sunday, February 21.

LG has confirmed to CNET that the event will see the launch of the company’s next flagship handset.

The invitation itself features the children’s jack-in-the-box toy with the words “play begins” overlaid on top. That in itself is pretty vague, but the “playful” imagery could imply a device with premium enough hardware for impressive gameplay and graphics.

The debut of a top-tier handset around MWC is not unusual for LG. Last year the company unveiled the G Flex 2 before the exhibition and in 2014, it took the wraps off the G Pro 2. Its current flagship, the G4, was officially unveiled in April last year, following a slew of leaks. Details pertaining to a successor are so far scarce.

As the mobile industry’s largest show, other phone companies are expected to introduce their flagships too, including Samsung’s rumored Galaxy S7 and the next HTC One handset (presumably called the One M10).

CNET will be on the ground during MWC 2016, so be sure to check back for all the announcements and updates.

Update, 11 a.m. UK: Article has been updated to reflect LG’s confirmation of a flagship phone.
