LG first to mobile 3D

LG’s 3D-capable smartphone and tablet will be the first of their kind to market, and could maintain the advantage for some time.

The Korean company today announced two devices capable of creating and viewing 3D content: the Optimus 3D smartphone and the Optimus Pad tablet computer. Both devices have dual-5-megapixel stereoscopic cameras for recording 3D video at 720p, and both can play back 3D content; the Optimus 3D with its glasses-less 3D display and the Optimus Pad with the help of stereoscopic glasses.

LG also announced a partnership with YouTube which would give users of either device the ability to upload 3D content directly to a 3D section of the popular video sharing site.

This shift to 3D for mobile devices will give LG a significant point of differentiation when the two devices launch mid-year. It also seems likely that LG will maintain this unique proposition throughout 2011 with none of its competitors suggesting a similar move in the near future. Fellow Korean company Samsung would be the most likely to follow suit, but Samsung representatives say that it is waiting for what it considers to be the right time before launching a 3D product.

“We want to make sure that there is enough popular content and that 3D on the small screen matches human behaviour,” said W.P. Hong, Samsung’s head of product planning.

Alternatively, LG wants to create the opportunity to bolster 3D adoption in televisions and considers 3D content creation in smartphones to be an essential part of increasing adoption rates of 3D across screens in a variety of sizes.
