LG Display announced late Wednesday it has begun mass production of what it calls the first circular plastic OLED, a slim 1.3-inch display that will be used in the forthcoming LG G Watch R.
Destined for the smartwatch’s round watch face, the P-OLED panel has a thickness of less than 0.6mm and a screen area that LG says is 57 percent larger than similarly sized square displays. The display features a 320×320 resolution that LG says produces a 100 percent color gamut.
Debuting this week at the IFA 2014 tech show in Berlin, the LG G Watch R comes less than six months after the Korean tech company announced the G Watch smartwatch. Though both devices run Google Android Wear, the G Watch R sports a distinct circular face compared to its predecessor’s square design.
Aiming for a higher, more sophisticated level of style that its predecessor didn’t quite achieve, the G Watch R also features a stainless steel frame and an interchangeable leather strap. The device is powered by a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor and a 410mAh battery.
According to LG, the device will be available in “key markets” starting in the fourth quarter of 2014. Price and release date information will be announced as launch dates of each region draw nearer.
