There’s already been rumors of a Windows Phone 8-powered HTC phone based on the One M8, but the latest HTC J Butterfly announced for Japanese carrier KDDI isn’t it.
Instead, the sequel to last year’s Butterfly S comes sporting similar specs to the One M8 flagship, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and a similar dual-camera rear system. The 5-inch phone also has 2GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage and Dot View cases.
Interestingly, instead of an ultrapixel camera, the rear shooter weighs in at an impressive 13 megapixels. As mentioned, there’s two cameras at the rear, and the KDDI release says both lenses will work together, capable of capturing the depth of an image for use with HTC’s UFocus feature. It’s the first time HTC is pairing the 2-camera system with a non-ultrapixel camera, but we’ll need to wait until we get our hands on the phone to see if it’s actually a good move. The feature lets you choose the focus you want after taking a picture.
The J Butterfly appears to be Japan-only for now, but given the past track record of the Butterfly series of devices, it’s likely to head to the rest of Asia and may even land in the US, like its predecessor, the Butterfly S (released as the Droid DNA for Verizon ).
