Is Apple about to announce a white iPod Touch?

It’s that time of year: the leaves are starting to fall, the nights are drawing in, and new iPods are in the air. The new iPod touch will be a minor upgrade, according to a rumour, with the most notable change being the colour.

A new white model will be introduced in the coming weeks, MacRumors reports. Specs will be very similar to the existing touch, with “only minor changes expected”. So what will change, apart from the colour?

The new model will have an oleophobic coating on the display, just like the iPhone 4 and iPad 2. This is to repel oil, and keep fingerprints to a minimum. A new ambient light sensor is also expected, adjusting the screen according to the light conditions and giving you better visibility. And that’s about it. No upgraded camera, no increased storage, no ability to teleport you home from work.

White parts for the iPod touch were spotted back in July, with the cases fitting the existing fourth-generation touch. The white iPhone 4 finally launched in the summer, following months of delays. There was thought to be a problem in producing the white cases — something Apple had rectified by the iPad 2 launch, introducing a white model from day one.

All talk is been focused on the iPhone 5 and 4S at the moment. T-Mobile’s US boss said yesterday the network won’t have the handset this year, prompting rumours it’ll be delayed until next year, or just that other operators will beat T-Mobile to it. Or that T-Mobile will only have the 4S.

These are all rumours, so it’s hard to know what to believe, but with everything else pointing to a launch next month, we’re inclined to think we’ll see some kind of new iPhone before the year’s out. Here’s hoping, anyway.
