LG has shown off a new 5-inch display with an amazing 1,080p resolution that will soon be finding its way into the Korean company’s new smart phones. Not only that, but this new screen manages to easily beat the pixel density offered by the iPhone 4S‘s retina display, potentially making it even sharper.
The iPhone 4S (and iPhone 4 before it) has a pixel density of 330ppi (pixels per inch), with the ‘retina’ tag indicating that the human eye couldn’t make out individual pixels at normal usage range. It makes images and videos so pin-sharp it was difficult to imagine how it could be beaten. LG has done exactly that though, with its new screen offering a whopping 440ppi.
Sadly, the screen isn’t currently housed inside a phone for us to marvel at, so we can only imagine at what high-res photos look like on this thing. LG’s new OLED TV provides amazing contrast thanks to its super deep blacks, but this phone screen instead uses a variant of LCD technology known as Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching (AH-IPS) that promises great viewing angles and improved efficiency.
LG has said the screen will be available towards the end of the year, but hasn’t mentioned anything about what new phones we’ll be seeing it in. Given LG is rumoured to be providing parts for the next generation iPhone 5, it wouldn’t be a huge stretch of the imagination to hope for this new screen to sit inside Apple’s latest super-phone.
LG also had its own prototype phone, the Eclipse, leaked not too long ago, which promised to be the world’s most powerful phone, with a quad-core processor and a stonking 2GB of RAM. If this phone does see the light of day, I’d bet a week’s wages this screen is on board.
