iPhone 5S due in August with new camera tech, report says

Apple’s follow-up to the iPhone 5 will be with us before September, if fresh rumours concerning the so-called iPhone 5S are to be believed.

An August debut is pencilled in for the anticipated follow-up, iMore reports, citing ‘sources familiar with the plans’. The phone itself meanwhile is tipped to have the same basic shape as the iPhone 5, but pack a more advanced processor and a better camera.

Until we hear official word with Apple, it’s wise to take any rumours concerning new gadgetry with a pinch or two of salt. iMore has proved accurate in the past however, pinning down the iPhone 4S‘ 12 September launch date.

The iPhone 5 already houses one of the best smart phone cameras money can buy, but with rival manufacturers making much of their own optical nous this year, a snappier snapper from Tim Cook and pals wouldn’t go amiss.

Phones like Sony’s Xperia Z and Huawei’s Ascend P2 go big on the pixel count, both boasting 13-megapixel sensors. The HTC One takes a different tack, offering a meagre four megapixels, but claiming that larger individual pixels let in more light, leading to better low-light snaps.

A more powerful processor and smarter camera would be modest improvements, but that’s certainly been the theme with Apple’s last few iPhone iterations.

Apple could dodge some criticism if its new mobile is indeed called the ‘5S’, as the ‘S’ denomination normally indicates a slightly improved device, rather than something new entirely.

New iPads also gets the rumoured release date treatment, pegged to be unveiled in April. That could be a follow-up to the larger iPad, or a second iPad mini.

Other rumours reckon a new iPhone could be iPhone 5-shaped but made mostly of plastic, possibly in an effort to keep the cost down. What would you like to see in Apple’s future smart phones? Is the iPhone near-perfect already? Or does Apple need to do something drastic to keep shoppers interested? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.
